MAD EP, RA

6

Welcome to the Ultrafood candy store. Please step in and see what our android chefs have prepared for you. Years of research and reverse engineering by our best androids, supported by countless undercover operations of our insect drones allow you to bring you the best in alt hip hop haute-cuisine. Not afraid of mixing cultures and culinary influences, Ad Noiseam's Ultrafood division have recruited two of the most forward-cooking chefs of the galaxy. Patrons of the Ad Noiseam audio eatery are already become familiar with Matthew Peters (aka chef Mad EP) through his "When I'm 6" appetizer, "Eating Movies" plat de résistance and "The Madlands Trilogy" magnum opus. Inspired as always, this American chef, newly relocated to the UK, presents a mille-feuille of audio trickery, cut-up, downtempo breaks and his succulent cello. Sharing the kitchen with Mad EP is Raoul Sinier (aka Ra), a Paris-based chef who has already demonstrated his talent in such establishments as Coredump, Sublight and Planet Mu. An amidst connoisseur of rich, textured sauces, uncommon mixture of hip hop, electronica and epic mixtures, this rising name of the audio gastronomy displays with his first 12" plate that there is no limit to the variety of spices he can bring to a dish. Fresh, flavourful and savoury, "Ultrafood" is the meeting of two audio cooks who share the same forward-thinking view on the hip hop recipe, and are not afraid to reshape it from the ground up, frying tightly hacked beats and samples, backing rich, changing melodies and adding clever, tongue-in-cheek vocal toppings. "Ultrafood" is a three-star menu which will leave a long, delicious taste to every palate, may it be human or robotic.

Doormouse

6

VINYL EDITION of the CD : so way, way, way back in 1994 dan doormouse first starting making hardcore techno in milwaukee wisconsin, then one day he stumbled upon a sun ra record and thus, 'breakcore' in the united states of america was born. he began the legendary addict and distort record labels soon after, and began releasing the most f.cked up high intensity music the world has ever seen. the nephew of lemmy from motorhead (really, no sh.t!), dan soon started performing solo and with his band meat around milwaukee in the midwest of the u.s., gaining a massive following of renegades, speed freaks and social workers. somehow, mike paradinas (mu-ziq) took notice, and 'broken' was dan's first major cd release in 2002 on the planet mu record label. but it comes as no surprise that the sorted and complex realities of breakcore stardom (in this case of bottle of jack daniels, and some misplaced punches) made it difficult to continue with planet mu. naturally, dan finds a home at cock rock disco with 'stanley yershonowski presents xylophone jism as the ridiculator.' and pleased we are! 'xylophone jism' is easily the greatest record ever made! it's an exploration of all types of music (...there's even whale song), pieced together into a vaguely abstract style that swallows up whole libraries of music! the listener is tossed this way and that, beaten by blasts from horn sections and gabber bass, ripped apart by high-speed breakbeats and strung out with latin rhythm. but listen to the ladies scream in delight when you get to the last track, where dan gives his brilliant version of some latin super-pop. and is there a secret track on this cd? who knows...

Synescape

10

t.kniep and p.münch have finally finished their first full length album since 2001 and compared to other ant-zen releases this is not simply an 'act' - it is an act! on this cd, synapscape's astonishing rhythm skills are perfectly displayed. keeping the beat straight but always changing the patterns throughout a track. when a track starts you might think you know how it will proceed, but while listening you will end up being surprised. there is a permanent change - without any real interference. the album could also be described as an 'attack on expectations' - sequencers and electronic percussion replace the expected bass drum; in a heavily distorted 4/4 track a techno-like 5th-chord is embedded; crystal clear drum strokes replace distorted beats; - those 'attacks' are the sparks of the burning flow. the variety of sound is evident in the ambient tracks like 'kollberg' and 'sellout', the hard 4/4-beat-ers like 'the hoe' and 'katunga' (which lean heavily toward the distorted dance floor) and the live-killer-tracks ('wings' and 'alice') which may be well-known to synapscape addicts. but act!'s general mood is what makes this cd a real album and not just a compilation of new tracks. this album is nothing less than an improvement and a logical progression of synapscape's conceptual work. the act! is done.

Hypnoskull

10

if hypnoskull's recent work could be defined in a word then 'diversification' would be the word. he has always been an open minded human being and who collaborates with musicians of all genres. Patrick stevens has moved far beyond the 'hardcore' corset he is still associated with. stevens' self-concept doesn't care about 'boundaries' of any kind. 'panik mekanik' perfectly displays that there are no reservations whatsoever in p.stevens' work. on this album you will find a large variety of styles, ranging from heavy breakbeats and drum'n'bass to dark hop and even ambient and soundtrackish tunes. but in each and every note you recognize that it's the unmistakable hypnoskull. fast break-attacks like 'the self detonation device' and 'in thee air' - that's patrick as you might know him from his' high-energetic live performances. 'mekanodruggembryo' or 'basement alpha mission triggerz' show the dark, moody hypno-side - and these tracks only show a few facets... it took a long process of selections, queries and adjustments to finalize 'panik mekanik', but as always the effort was worth it - the end result being a fantastic piece of work. this is undoubtedly the best hypnoskull album so far - now it's your turn to evaluate!

Genevieve Pasquier

10

geneviéve pasquier's debut cd 'soap bubble factory' introduced this outstanding artist to listeners who do not have access to a record player (having a vinyl collection isn't expected anymore). now, after countless customers' requests, both geneviéve and ant-zen are presenting g.p.'s finest vinyl tracks on compact disc (for the first time). what you will find is the complete 'virgin thoughts' lp, three 7" tracks, 'fairy tale' from the split-10" with bastards of love, g.p.'s 'in stahlgewittern II' compilation contribution - and the previously unreleased 'blitzkrieg baby' (part 1 and part 2). the style ranges from distorted noise-influenced industrial ('don't think i am...') to dark electro beats ('pulse'); also included is her take on a pop tune ('today the disco'). this retrospective shows geneviéve's artistic variety right from the beginning. the mastery of many electronic sound facets, combined with her exceptional voice - claiming, alluring, repelling, suspicious - was and will be g.p.'s trademark. all of this is perfectly displayed on this truly fine release.

Converter

10

there is a theory that track 2 on a cd is the cd's "hit". on this 2cd package, track 2 is 'domination' - enough said. two years after the first 'expansion' came out, we present the second strike. this expansion contains unreleased material, live tracks and remixes by industrial icons like sonar and ambient masters like architect and displacer. scott sturgis' musical variety is amazing, ranging from heavily distorted industrial beat attacks to dark ambient soundscapes. 'expansion 2.0' tracks range from the 'shock front' to 'exit ritual' period - which perfectly documents sturgis' improvement. instead of repeating a successful concept over and over again, scott experimented with new influences and various styles. he even has enough balls to communicate with satan herself - as it is documented here. this is a highly recommended addition to your converter collection. packaging: jewelcase w/ 4 page booklet.
