Treachery

5

A new "superband" made of Hecate, Abelcain and Slutmachine, Treachery allows these three dark souls to express their love for doom-ish metal and über dark atmospheres not only with electronic sounds, but also with guitars (played by Abelcain) and vocals (Hecate's). Extremely oppressive, black and "evil", the whole thing sounds at times close to Bong-Ra's White Darkness project, but with much faster riffs and rhythms, and therefore oscillating between doom and breakcore-leaning metal. No listening allowed without making the signs of the beast.

Dogr

10

Sonig is proud to present the debut album of dogr, a young, New-York-based American artist who is skilled with instrumental expertise, artistic conceptualism, and an unworldly vocal virtuosity. With his debut, he finds a mesmerizing way to comply with unheard musical ideas and conducts most-satisfying webbed experiments, not only for the sake of a great art being discovered or riotously exploited; but for the sake of clear and beautiful language, accurate in its contraction, while original in its downright musical quality. Moreover, dogr never loses his curiosity nor his beatnik bare experimentalism. The production of Mouse on Mars’ Andi Toma adds an analogue thrill to the spiraling epic record that is In Korean Wilds and Villages. So who is the young man behind this faunal alias? David Michael DiGregorio is dogr. He started in coastal New England with a piano teacher who gave him lots of Bach to play. At a young age he created harmonies using a a four-track mini-cassette tape recorder, his voice, and a old Roland JX-8P with programmer. Growing older, he moved on to 16-mm experimental filmmaking and electro-acoustic composition, using a Bolex camera and a Serge modular synthesizer. During his years in Amsterdam, his time was spent with head and ears full of swollen voices, mostly his own, multiplied; inspired in part by his earlier time in a big gospel choir, and his interest in the Korean operatic form called pansori, in which one singer assumes the role of the narrator, different characters in the story, and even the sounds of animals and nature. After many experiments using delay and loops to create massive vocal textures, he began telling the stories of others through his own music. Many of the pieces comprising In Korean Wilds and Villages come from the in the room series of musical/visual/theatrical storytelling performances, conceived by artist Sung Hwan Kim. The collaboration resulted in music featuring the sound of many voices made by one. Many of the instruments used on the album are also instruments and props used in the performances, for example, the broken, wheezing harmonium on "things are more exciting than they are" the bell sound recorded in Seoul on “fiks it up”; and the makeshift slide guitar of "grows on top of the old one" and "o how this city has changed". Many songs on In Korean Wilds and Villages are pieces in which melodic phrases wind into journeys. The text pulls the listeners out to the realm of story-telling in a macroscopic sense; meanwhile, the winding melismata and grains of voice, like detailed veins under the skin, draw the listener microscopically into the music as it is in progress.

Von Magnet

10

von magnet dreams of the existence of other possible paths; thin and minute. those tightrope walking paths almost invisible. bouncing in between two perils, two poles, above empires, across frames, which can slip through the breaches of any walls. that is the story of this album. when rage is accompanied by tears. this album is our reaction facing the brutal reality of our world today. a world under pressure where all is put into opposition, where everything would like to divide us and where we are being arbitrarily dictated the absolute necessity of a choice. but with "ni prédateur ni proie" (neither predator nor prey) we will not choose our side. - there between partial / impartial, north / south, subjective / objective, orient / occident, coward / hero, poor / rich, indifferent / partisan ... we will remain bare handed, like astonished and turbulent children dancing on a mine field. we will just stare at you, we will fall into rage and boil into tears. within this emotional turmoil, flore magnet and the turkish actress esra bezen bilgin replace women where they are never welcome. women of multiplicity, violence, engagement and resistance. phil von gives way to the voices of the rom kids of mostar and the jewish and palestinian actors from amos gitai and hany abu-assad movies. - at their side, def sharpens his analogue bass lines and darkens atmospherical ambiances which often feel like "war". scattered explosions, shots, crackles, complaints or laments. only our guest, kurdish sufi musician mŸbin dunen softens the crawling tension. his ney bringing our clamour down to a silent light thread. now von magnet signs a harsh, raw, urgent and poetical piece, mixed and produced flawlessly by master norscq. another dary fusion which binds classical music flavours with oriental rhythms, tribal percussions within neo industrial electronic soundscapes. here orient is not any more sensual and phantasmagoric, it is rigid and almost cold. here occident is no more sparkling and victorious, it is sad and decadent. nevertheless "neither predator nor prey" is the length of rope which suddenly ties them up, confronting our hearts to dive close to the abyss.

End

10

the dangerous class is the new album by end. five years in the making, it is 17 tracks of audio madness bound together by themes of sex, drugs, and rebellion. a wild mix of live instrumentation, programmed electronics, and collaged sample fragments, the dangerous class is the soundtrack to a world of wayward youth given to deviance, chemical transcendence and violent transgression.

Kevin Blechdom

10

evin Blechdom and Sonig team up to release an acoustic album chock full of palpitating love songs. Kevin Blechdom plays piano and sings. The album is lyrical, lush, and direct, with emotion of epic proportion. “Gentlemania” was recorded at La Frette Studios in Paris and Heavysheet Studios in Berlin and was mixed by Shapemod in 2008. Co-produced and co-written with her good friend Mocky--the collaboration benefits from Mocky's nurturing qualities that contrast, calm, and frame Blechdom's intrinsic chaos. As the title suggests, “Gentlemania” is not as schizophrenic or madcap manic as her previous two electronic albums. Instead, Blechdom slows down, takes a deep breath, and, with thoughtful control, peels back layers of emotion for the listener to hear. Combining a strong background in classical and experimental music with a broad knowledge of pop styles, Blechdom seamlessly travels between and coalesces country jangle, Broadway show tunes, old-school R&B, and many other styles into a cohesive and true musical story. The autobiographical and interpersonal themes revolve around introspection, longing, doubt, hope, and ultimately, human transformation. The album is defined by Blechdom's idiosyncratic melodies and motifs, profoundly personal lyrics, unique vocal delivery and poignant piano playing which fuse with Mocky’s sympathetic drumming and innovative arrangements. Also featured on the record are guest vocalists: Jamie Lidell, Planningtorock, and Denzel Sinclair in addition to guest instrumentalists: Taylor Savvy, Andre Vida, and the Organ Lady. "The making of this record has been really intense, but I've come out feeling purified," shared Blechdom. "I've grown so much since 'Eat My Heart Out,' and Mocky is the perfect writing partner--I feel like I've been lifted up to a whole new level of inspiration and possibilities. After all the things we've seen over the past couple of years, beautiful and tragic, in the end I'm really grateful. It has made me create music I could not be more in love with.
